Abstract: The reflection on heritage and its uses is one of the most debated topics in the current context. This is because the inventory of heritage is increasingly larger and wider, thus giving new use to buildings is a way of giving historical continuity to heritage with contemporary adaptations to ensure its preservation. In this sense, this dissertation aims to understand the general principles of intervention in heritage buildings in contemporary times, more specifically in the Monastery of São Salvador de Travanca. This complex, which hides between the fertile valleys of the Sousa and Tâmega rivers, once belonged to the Benedictine Order. This building played an essential role in the administrative domain and was crucial regarding the territorial and social consolidation at the time. The Monastery was adapting to the functions assigned to it over time, always responding to societal needs. Although it was abandoned in 2005, when the hospital installed there since the decade of 1960 closed, it never lost its central role in the region. The strategy followed in the proposed intervention was based on both the history and evolution of the building, as well as intervention theories, and the analysis of interventions in other monastic buildings, always to preserve the building's memory, safeguarding consistently its asset value. Programmatic guidance is of great relevance concerning the rehabilitation of this nature. Rehabilitating this building by adjusting a specific program to it, while recovering its memory, was the goal of the investigation. It was sought in the permanence of some of its uses to perpetuate its memory, finding in the hotel an easy adaptation. The proposed project can respond to the social, tourist and cultural needs felt by the local population. Converting the Monastery into the equipment of temporary accommodation enhances the heritage divulgation. This brings to life a space aimed not only at cultural tourism as a hub of attraction and dissemination of the region, in its landscape and architectural values, but also to promote complementary activities such as vocational training and employment in general.
