Abstract: Porquê a Casa de Chá Boa Nova?
Why the Boa Nova Tea House? It’s a building that does not live without its landscape that would never make sense without what contextualizes it as an integral part of the place. I, sometimes find myself drawing scribbles to kill time, but, for some reason, I rarely draw architecture in these situations, it always seems to lack the spark that starts the design process, it seems that the lessons had their effect: without a program and, more importantly, a cultural, social, economic and geographical environment, the design of the project is lost in anonymous lines that lead me to draw other types of figures. However, with a defined surrounding, and a space to build, the lines take on other dimensions, a force of its own that seeks a constructed response for that space. There are projects that go beyond this dimension, not only corresponding in a functional and aesthetic way, but also becoming part of a place, which is constructed by its whole - its inhabitants and the buildings they inhabit (One that does not speak simply of building to survive or to “be safe from harm”, it speaks of a dwelling that transcends the basic needs of the human being). The Boa Nova Tea House not only preserves the rocks that make up its foundation, but also completes a set among the elements in its proximity, as if it always belonged there. It is this dimension of space, and the way we inhabit it, as well as the influences behind it that I intend to explore in this dissertation and with this case study, as a viable process for Architecture with a enhanced sense of social and cultural responsibility and adapted to the current days. Modern architecture cannot be restricted to buildings that correspond to unrealistic ideals of beauty and aesthetics, but rather to something flexible enough to correspond to functional, social, cultural and economic needs and always through the mediation of technology and the traditional.
