This dissertation addresses and studies the relationship of complicity established between architecture and ideology, in the context of three European totalitarian regimes that politically marked the first half of the twentieth century. It promotes a theoretical and critical approach to materialized forms as semiotic and disciplinary tools for a political objective. By analyzing and exposing the active role of architecture in the ideological systems of German Nazism, Italian Fascism, and Portuguese Corporatism, this study contributes to a critical reading of the discipline as a cultural and political practice. Its strategic purpose is to understand the method and extent of the activity of the architectural discipline in its capacity to legitimize, propagate, and express these ideological systems, and to evaluate how the ethical limits of action in its traditional and ordinary merely functional and representative dimension have been overcome. The research work seeks to demonstrate that architecture was and continues to be na instrument of production and symbolism of the dominant political power, expressing itself through monumentality, materiality, historical, and spatial staging. These mechanisms allow the legitimation and normalization of ideals and principles at the social level and the manipulated construction of the new collective identity. With the accelerated change produced in the current political dynamics and the new iliberal world order, it becomes urgent, with reference to readings of the past, to understand the spaces of action of contemporary architecture and the ethical and deontological limits of its application in the service of new ideological systems.
