Foram utilizados um questionário sociodemográfico, a Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) e a Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL).
Firefighting involves frequent exposure to emergency situations, human suffering, and potentially traumatic events, representing a significant challenge to firefighters’ mental health and professional quality of life. In this context, it is important to understand the relationship between psychological strain factors, such as burnout, secondary traumatic stress (STS), and compassion fatigue (CF), and positive psychological resources, such as compassion satisfaction (CS) and work engagement. The present study aimed to analyse the relationship between Professional Quality of Life (burnout, STS, CF, and CS) and Work Engagement among portuguese firefighters. This quantitative and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 169 firefighters from mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions, aged between 18 and 63 years. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL). Statistical analyses were performed using IBM® SPSS® Statistics 30.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) for Windows and JAMOVI (version 2.6.44), including correlation analyses, independent-samples t-tests, multiple linear regressions, and moderation analyses. The results revealed negative associations between burnout, CF, and work engagement, as well as between CF and CS. In contrast, CS showed a positive association with work engagement and a negative association with burnout. Work engagement emerged as the strongest predictor of CS, whereas burnout was identified as a significant negative predictor of this variable. Some gender differences were observed; however, no significant effects were found for age, years of service, or professional rank. Regarding the moderation analyses, neither CS moderated the relationship between STS and burnout, nor did work engagement moderate the relationship between CF and CS. The findings suggest that CS and work engagement constitute important psychological resources associated with better professional adaptation, whereas burnout, STS, and CF are related to greater psychological strain. These results highlight the importance of implementing strategies aimed at promoting mental health and psychological well-being among firefighters. |
