Infertility is, in most cases, an unexpected and unpredictable event, with a significant psychological impact on women. According to the WHO, infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. The prevalence of this condition in Portugal is estimated to be between 9% and 10%. The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of women facing infertility and fertility treatments, particularly in vitro fertilization (IVF), using either their own or donated oocytes. To this end, a mixedmethods study was conducted. The quantitative study involved a sample of 98 women aged between 33 and 38 years, who completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Personal Feelings Questionnaire – Shame and Guilt subscale. The quantitative results showed, on average, normative levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, although there was high variability among participants. Feelings of guilt and shame were found to be moderate. Strong and significant associations were observed between guilt and depression, and between shame and anxiety. No significant differences were found in the main variables under study between women who used their own oocytes and those who used donor oocytes. The qualitative study was conducted through a focus group with 5 women aged between 33 and 38. The qualitative analysis revealed intense emotional suffering throughout the process of infertility and IVF, marked by feelings of sadness, anger, frustration, loneliness, shame, and guilt. A negative impact on women’s identity and self-esteem emerged, as well as on couple dynamics, although relationship strengthening was also noted in some cases. Social pressure, lack of psychological support, and financial and logistical obstacles were identified as additional stressors. |
