The following dissertation provides a detailed analyses of constructive elements which comprise the architectural composition inherited from the language of Mozarabic mediterranean architecture which, after the Islamic invasions of the territory, began to characterize the landscape of Algarve. Its influence and importance are to be recognized in the development of regional architecture, as well as its presence in learned languages of architecture, especially in Modernist language, where such influence can be recognized in 19th century and 20th century works. Faro’s old town (the oldest and most well-preserved area) will be the subject of this case study. The Faro´s old town, as it is the “capital” of the Algarve and one of the most well-preserved original spaces in terms of Moorish-influenced architecture in the Algarve. It also stands-out for its status as the birthplace of modernist architecture in Portugal, having been shaped by architects such as Manuel Gomes da Costa (1921–2016) and António Vicente de Castro (1920–2002). The historical and cultural interest of one of the biggest and most significant marks in regional architecture in national territory, which is recognized by its most characteristic elements, constructive and stylistic elements of Islamic Art, which contributed to the distinction of Algarve’s regional architecture through distinctive ornamental elements.
