The research presented deepens the capacity of existentialist philosophy to allow a critical reading of modern and contemporary architecture, by considering the architectural space as an extension of the existential condition of the human being. Thus, it intends to start from the canonical premise of existentialism as stated by Jean Paul Sartre, according to which existence precedes essence, in the sense of studying how architecture can act as a mediator between the subject and the world in its ability to construct meaning and attribute essence to space. The analysis covers the evolution of architecture in the transition from modernism to postmodernism, investigating authors and works representative of the intersection between existentialist thought and architectural practice by intersecting the philosophical themes of Heidegger and Sartre with projects from Adolf Loos, Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier and the Team X, to Lebbeus Woods, Rem Koolhaas, and Robert Venturi. This transition is framed according to the concepts of solid and liquid modernity according to Zygmunt Bauman in order to investigate how the notions of alienation, rootedness, and dwelling manifest themselves differently in architecture throughout the twentieth century. As such, the investigation means to reinforce that the approximation between architecture and existentialist thought constitutes a coherent theoretical framework as a response to contemporary alienation by understanding the urban space as an ontological extension of being, and by legitimizing the ethical and existential dimension of architecture.
