Behind the paradoxical figure of D. Pedro, an unlikely combination of liberal king/emperor and absolute monarch, the article unfolds the singular destiny of the Portuguese Charter of 1826, a laboratory of granted constitutionalism where God, history and customs dispute the king’s creative power. From the legend of the Laws of Lamego to the positivist upheavals of 1910, the fable of a Catholic monarchy that claims to educate the nation through the ‘moderating power’ is woven, before the utopia of a constitution lived between customs and grace is shattered by the double regicide and the advent of the republic.en_EN
