D. João VI entre o liberalismo revolucionário e o absolutismo moderado : a proposta de Carta Constitucional de 1823

Abstract

As invasões francesas inscreveram no horizonte mental das elites políticas portuguesas uma nova concepção de regime que se opõe ao absolutismo monárquico que estava cada vez mais afastado da renovação política que alastrava na Europa. Duas correntes entram em conflito: o absolutismo liderado por D. Miguel e o liberalismo por D. Pedro IV. No meio, parecia querer emergir D. João VI, mas as suas hesitações e morte inesperada acabaram por envolver os dois irmãos num conflito do qual triunfou o regime liberal.

The French invasions inscribed on the mental horizon of the Portuguese political elites a new Conception of regime that opposed the monarchical absolutism, which was inscreasingly distant from the political renewal spreading across Europe. Two forces como into conflitct: absolutism led by D. Miguel and liberalism by D. Pedro IV. In the midle, D. João VI seemed to want to emerge, but his hesitations and unexpected death ended up drawing the two brothers into a conflit from which the liberal regime triumphed.
