A praça : o seu papel na malha urbana e na vida quotidiana ao longo do percurso histórico

Abstract

Nesta dissertação estudo a "Praça", espaço urbano, que tem vindo a ser utilizado por arquitectos, urbanistas e engenheiros-militares na estruturação das cidades. A ele estavam associadas funções, de importância variável, que fazia com que as pessoas o utilizassem. Actualmente a maioria das praças serve para o estacionamento de automóveis ou para passagem furtiva dos cidadãos. Nesta reflexão, aponto motivos que me parecem evidentes e que estão interligados, fazendo com que as praças sejam pouco utlizadas: os utilizadores da praça não se identificam com o seu desenho, desajustado às necessidades de uma sociedade evoluída; a sociedade vive a um ritmo apressado, com muitas solicitações (o emprego, o percurso de e para o emprego, o trânsito, etc. etc.); o avanço das telecomunicações que condiciona as relações de convivência, privilegiando a comunicação virtual em detrimento da comunicação física. Mas os motivos não se esgotam por aqui... No meu entender, a pouca utilização das praças teve repercuções na vida do cidadão. Logo, defendo a necessidade de se revitalizar e reinventar a "Praça". Assim, apresento algumas estrtégias passíveis de serem aplicadas, que passam essencialmentepor três "entidades": arquitectos e urbanistas, autarcas e sociedade em geral. Os arquitectos e urbanistas caberá a responsabilidade de propor espaços cujo desenho possua uma capacidade de atracção e que se identifique com os utilizadores. Aos autarcas competirá promover actividades que incentivem a população ao uso das praças.

On this thesis I study the "Square", urban space, that has been used by architect, urbanisms and military‐engineers on the city structure. To the space there were associated functions, of variable importance, that made people to use it. Nowadays majority of the squares is used for car parking or for furtive and fast citizen crossing. On this essay, I point out reasons that sound evident and that are in connection, making the use of the squares very limited: the square users do not identify themselves with the design, not in agreement with the needs of a developed society; society leaves in a fast rhythm, with lots of demands (job, route from and to job, traffic, etc.); the progress of the telecommunications that regulate the sociability, that is privileging the virtual communication with the loss of the physical communication. But reasons do not end here... On my point of view, the reduced use of the squares had repercussions on citizen’s life. Therefore, I defend the need to revitalize and reinvent the “Square”. Being so, I present some strategies that can be applicable, and go basically through tree “entities”: architects and urbanists, governors and general society. To the architects and urbanists will fit the responsibility to propose spaces witch drawings have an attraction capacity that will be identified by the users. The responsibility of the governors will be to promote the use of the square to the population.
