Fortes da restauração : do abandono à valorização : o Forte de São João Baptista

Abstract

Resumo: A presente dissertação, tem como base o estudo específico de uma das vertentes da Arquitetura Militar, em particular os fortes militares construídos após e durante os vinte e oito anos da Guerra da Restauração Portuguesa (1640-1668). A singularidade deste conjunto de fortes, que deixaram de ter a sua função primordial de defesa da costa, transformaram-se em espaços devolutos a partir do século XX, que resultou na perda do valor histórico e patrimonial que tinham até então. É, assim, imprescindível caraterizar os vários conceitos que se encontram subjacentes a esta temática, nomeadamente a tipologia, o papel dos engenheiros militares, a relação com a linha de costa e, essencialmente, os motivos que levaram à sua construção, tal como a época que foram alvo de operações de manutenção e conservação e, consequentemente, quando foram abandonados. Atualmente, os valores associados à sua função deixaram de existir, no entanto os restantes valores associados à história, contexto, arquitetura, tipologia e materialidade mantêm-se, importando conservá-los, valorizá-los e transmiti-los às gerações vindouras. A investigação debruça-se na caraterização destas fortificações, identificação dos seus valores e definição de uma metodologia de intervenção que os proteja e valorize. Escolhemos como caso de estudo o Forte de São João Baptista, em Esposende, com a pretensão de devolver-lhe o passado que está posto em causa atribuindo-lhe uma nova função que ajude a interpretar e conservar aquela estrutura com a finalidade de dar a conhecer à comunidade a importância que este Património tem nos dias de hoje, bem como outras fortificações, que se encontram inseridas na mesma história e no mesmo contexto, de modo a que exista uma valorização de um território, de uma identidade e de uma paisagem tão marcante.

Abstract: The basis of this project was to elaborate a specific study about one of the strands of the military architecture, in particular the military fortifications built after and during the twenty eight years of the Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1668). The singularity of this set of fortifications, that left behind their primary function of costal defense, was tumed into/and became abandoned places, that are loosing their historical and patrimonial value kept until then. So, the necessity of analyzing the several concepts underlined in this issue is undeniable, namely, the typology, the role of the militar engineers, the connection with the coastline, and essentially, the motives that led to the constructions, and so on... Nowadays, after the disuse of this kind of Patrimony, it is necessary to give back their importance, and also value the past in order to preserve the memory of the future. The work concems, firsdy, a wider analy sis about the fortification the were constructed back then, during that era, and how is their State of conservation. So then, we can determined which is the more effective principie when applying it to the intervention. In particular, I choose as a practical case, the fortication of São João Batista, in Esposende, with the aim of giving back its past which is at stake, and therefore, arrises the necessity of idealizing an interpretative centre. This center is intended to make the community aware of the importance that these type of patrimony have nowadays, as well as other fortifications, which find themselves inserted in the same history and context, in order to value the territory, the identity and such a remarkable landscape.
