Housing and the act of inhabiting are cross-cutting concepts in time. This investigation specifically high the examplary Modern architecture housing, serve as the object of study, and the Contemporary dwelling as a model for the understanding of the architectural questions that are today important, in particular flexibility, as the decisive and capable approach to predicting and defining habitat in the future. The path adopted for the construction of this transversal reading was traced chronologically with an understanding that starts at the turn to the 20th and in which the context of the life to the time until the middle of the century is analyzed, as well as the "houses" that host this experience with special emphasis on the morphology of space and the phenomenology of a spatiality of a clearly minimal nature. In a contemporary perspective of the above-mentioned approach, we have sought to emphasize temporarily the turning point for the new millennium and the proposals that are currently on the surface. Flexibility is the approach chosen for the study, as a procedure for the long-term guarantee of the sustainability of the house, being also relevant for the rehabilitation of the existing ones with potential for the continuity of the dwelling life cycle, to instead of demolition. The practical case of the Complex of the Lameiras is an excuse for the experimentation of the analyzed theories applied in a concrete project with potential to be rehabilitated, with the aim of transfering new principles that make this Complex self-sufficient in terms of the capacity of renovation of the dwelling, always maintaining the indispensable confort for the enjoyment of this environment. Therefore, with the Lameiras project as the result of the all research, the following deductions must be taken into account: Modern housing is based on the selected sample, in perfect alignment with contemporaneity for the implementation of flexible space approaches, the values that were in the genesis of the structuring of living environments continue to make sense now in another perspective associetad to renewed methodologies in technological, spatial and social terms and the rehabilitation of long-term impact is the necessary answer for the viability of “the many ways of dwell” that the dweelling makes possible.
