Arquitetura militar : as fortalezas de São Tiago e São João Baptista do Funchal

Abstract

O presente trabalho de investigação tem como objetivos o conhecimento, a valorização e a divulgação do património arquitetónico militar existente na Madeira, mais concretamente na cidade do Funchal. Neste contexto, procura-se compreender a importância e evolução histórica dos sistemas defensivos, as razões e o modo como foi introduzida a arquitetura militar na Madeira, bem como assim, compreender a evolução urbanística, à luz das especificidades do território, das influências e sintonia com outras cidades e das vivências e ritmos inerentes à génese e crescimento da cidade ao longo de séculos. O relevo dado às fortalezas de São Tiago e de São João Baptista, assentou nas determinantes históricas e sociais que levaram à sua construção e à localização estratégica das duas fortalezas no espaço urbano, visando a melhoria efetiva do sistema defensivo da cidade do Funchal. No âmbito da arquitetura militar e dada a importância para a compreensão da matéria em estudo, foi abordada, no contexto português, a evolução histórica dos sistemas defensivos no continente europeu, desde a fortificação medieval até à fortificação moderna. Com esta investigação pretende-se ainda, através dos casos de estudo, conhecer os métodos de fortificar, empregues pelos arquitetos, engenheiros, fortificadores e mestres das obras reais, no decorrer das várias intervenções que as fortificações sofreram ao longo dos anos. A dissertação visa igualmente, num quadro de reconhecimento e valorização do património edificado, contribuir para a afirmação da importância da preservação deste tipo de património, identificando-o como parte integrante da história do Funchal e como tal, indissociável da identidade da cidade e de todos quantos, em cada tempo, protagonizaram essa mesma história.

The aim of this research work is to promote the knowledge, valorisation and dissemination of the existing architectural heritage in Madeira, especially in the city of Funchal. In this context, the objective is to understand the importance and historical evolution of the defensive systems, the purposes and the means in which military architecture was introduced in Madeira, as well as to understand the urban development in light of the particularities of the territory, of the influences and consistency with other cities and the different perceptions and rhythms pertaining the genesis and growth of the city over the centuries. The emphasis given to fortress of São Tiago and São João Baptista, lays in the historical and social determinants that led to their construction and to their strategic position in the urban space, aiming the effective enhancement of the defensive system of the city of Funchal. In the context of military architecture and with relevance to the understanding of the subject studied here, the historical evolution of the European continent defensive systems, from the medieval to the modern fortification, is addressed. In addition, with this research work it is intended, through the case studies, to learn the fortification methods employed by architects, engineers and masters of the royal works, during the various interventions that the fortifications experienced over the years. Finally, this research work also aims, within the framework of acknowledgement and valorisation of the edified heritage, to assert the importance of the preservation of this type of heritage, identifying it as an integral part of Funchal's history and as such, inseparable from the identity of the city and of all who, at any time, took part in the same story.
