dc.description.abstractA presente dissertação tem como objetivo o estudo da vida e obra de Ruy Jervis D`Athouguia, conceituado Arquiteto de meados do século XX, uma das mais importantes figuras no desenvolvimento do Movimento Moderno em Portugal. O tema surge após terem sido levantadas algumas questões a propósito da sua obra, o modo como soube interpretar o contexto político, social e cultural do país. Numa postura individual, no modo silencioso como desenvolveu a sua obra, num território muito particular. O estudo revela os motivos e as diferenças da arquitetura do Movimento Moderno, entre Portugal e o mundo, e ainda, a arquitetura em Cascais a partir do período da monarquia e o desenvolvimento do território, com os novos modelos modernistas, até à afirmação plena, na segunda metade do século XX. A importância dos arquitetos estruturantes na sua obra, que souberam motivar, que provocaram admiração e foram exemplares na defesa dos seus princípios, quer no campo teórico e quer no campo prático. Expõe algumas obras relevantes no seu percurso, pretende mostrar a transversalidade das suas obras, que vão dos edifícios de habitação individual e coletiva, aos equipamentos escolares e culturais. Num momento muito particular de luta pela afirmação de novos modelos arquitetónicos, a casa Sande e Castro, o caso de estudo, pretende revelar e colocar esta obra, junto das mais importantes, no contexto da arquitetura modernista em Portugal na década de 50, como um dos exemplos mais radicais e próximos da arquitetura internacional.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractThe objective of this dissertation is the study of Ruy Jervis D’Athouguia’s life and work. A renowned architect of the XX century and one of the most important figures in the development of the Portuguese Modernism Movement. The particular way he interpreted the country’s political, social and cultural context, in addition to his own individual and quiet posture when developing his work, are some of the questions addressed, that ultimately, made this topic arise. This case study, not only shows the motives and differences of the Portuguese and World’s Modernism Movement, but also Cascais’ architecture. In this town, the focus will be from the monarchy times and the land’s development with the new modernist models, until its full affirmation in the second half of the XX century. Furthermore, it will tackle the importance of structural architects, that were real role models when fighting for their principles, both in the theoretical and practical field, that motivated and cause admiration to the architect. Also, displays some of the most relevant work in his path, willing to demonstrate his work transversality, that goes from individual and collective habitation buildings, to school and cultural equipment. In a particular time for the affirmation of new architecture models, Sande e Castro house, can be placed together with the most important references in the modernist architecture of the 50s decade in Portugal. Therefore, this case study wishes to analyze and set this work as an example as one of the most radical and similar to the international architecture found in Portugal.pt_PT
