Abstract: This research aimed to distinguish between engagement and burnout, that is, if there is any relationship between them and the influence of sociodemographic variables in these two concepts. The first studies were centered on health professionals and social support (doctors, psychologists, nurses and social workers). Over time it began to be said that teachers would also be a significant advocacy group. There are professionals who adapt the difficulties that are presented in their professional life, thus becoming engaged professionals, who can not adapt these difficulties can suffer from the burnout syndrome. In this research, the quantitative method was used. The questionnaire was organized in three parts, the first one concerns the sociodemographic data, the second part is the assessment of the engagement, using the UWHE scale, the third and last part refers to the evaluation of burnout, we used the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), both scales validated for Portuguese language. Stata 12 software was used for our statistical analysis. The sample consisted of 409 people of Portuguese nationality, with only 389 surveys valid. The sample consisted of 214 females and 175 males, with a mean age of 34.84 years, being 204 unmarried, 148 married, 31 divorced, 4 separated and 2 widowed. Most of the sample workers work in the private sector and only 74 individuals are civil servants. Eight hypotheses were proposed, two of them subdivided into seven. The results show that burnout and engagement are negatively related, but with some socio demographic variables, no statistically significant results were found. We have been able to establish for all of them a negative correlation between burnout and the degree of satisfaction with life, and a positive correlation between engagement and satisfaction with life.
