Frederico George : a arquitectura e a vida - dois casos de estudo

Abstract

A seguinte dissertação propoê-se compreender o trabalho, as obras e as consequências da vida de Frederico George. Vamos estudar e acompanhar a carreira nas Artes e na Educação, as reformas propostas, as condições criadas à priori para se mudar o modo como se ensinava nos estabelecimentos de Arte do País, a sua vida como Pintor e também como Arquitecto, tudo isto durante grande parte da época do Estado Novo. Através da investigação das suas obras de Arquitectura na zona de Belém, podemos ver o que as antecedeu, como a Exposição do Mundo Português, os murais de Frederico George, até à convivência com Cottinelli Telmo – que o leva a estudar Arquitectura. Acompanhamos uma época de mudança, onde Frederico George lê e sente o modo como se ensinava e estudava Arquitectura em Portugal, que, rapidamente, necessitava de uma reforma, de maneira a poder estar a par da Europa e de uma América emergente. Vemos ainda o seu contributo para a Arquitectura feita, com a sua importante participação no Inquérito à Arquitectura Popular Portuguesa, que vai influenciar as suas obras em Lisboa.

The following thesis has proposed to understand the achievements, the work and its consequences throughout the life of Frederico George. We will be studying his career in the work field of Arts and Education, at the renovations he proposed and at what he did to develop the foundations of what would be the way the Education is in Portugal right now, his life as a Painter and as an Architect, all of this in a time of strict measures, known as Estado Novo. Through the understanding of his work in the Belém zone, we can see what were his influences and what was there before he developed his projects to the area, namely the Portuguese World Exhibition, the walls he painted, and even the acquaintance of Cottinelli Telmo, which ultimately led George into the path of Architecture. We track a time of major changes, where Frederico George tries to understand the way Architecture, and Art in a general way, was taught and studied in Portugal, but nevertheless needed a renovation so that it could be alongside Europe and an emerging America. We also see his contribution to built Architecture, with his important participation in the Survey of Portuguese Popular Architecture, which will influence his work in Lisbon.
