This work is estructured based on an analysis on the historical, social and urban context that took place in Lisbon at the turn of the twentieth century. This so to clarify under which context did Ventura Terra meant to intervene on the city. In this sense, we proceeded to choose as study cases, three of his projects on Rua Alexandre Herculano, recognizing it as one of the places in Lisbon that the architect most influenced with his trait. On that basis, we proceeded to expand on the necessary contexts and events required to recognize that turning point to the twentieth century as a moment in historical continuity, and mainly as a reflection of a time where the understanting of architects about architecture was suffering necessary transformations; alongside with the developments that happend on Europe and North American societies and architecture. That allows to acknowlegde Miguel Ventura Terra, as a man and as an architect, to expand on his political and social beliefs; and on his view about architecture as a reflection of those and of his Beuax-Arts academic background. It is relevant to acknowledge that all of the architect reasoning and work fits in a moment that in Portugal it’s possible to observe a continuous process of weak economic conditions, and that, at the same time, it is about to transition to a new political cicle. Also acknowledging that, influenced by the capitalist movement spreading across Europe, together with the population growth that took place in Lisbon, an ambitious plan of urban expansion to the north of the city was in progress.
