Arquitectura termal : valorização, conservação e salvaguarda das termas de Melgaço

Abstract

Intitulada Arquitectura Termal - Recuperação e Salvaguarda das Termas de Melgaço, esta dissertação pretende analisar os conceitos e as tipologias da arquitectura termal e a sua origem e evolução na História. O tema surge da vontade e curiosidade em estudar como surgiram, o que foram e o porquê de se tornarem numa arquitectura tão procurada, numa busca incessante de perceber toda a sua história. Começamos por estudar a sua origem na época dos Caldeus e dos Romanos, e de seguida alguns casos de referência contemporâneos, para que no final pudéssemos realizar o caso de estudo. Constatamos que o conceito “Termas” foi inicialmente usado pelos romanos para classificar os locais destinados aos banhos públicos. A higiene corporal assim como a terapia por via da água medicinal eram duas das finalidades destes banhos. Durante a segunda metade do século XVIII, deparamo-nos com um grande desenvolvimento do termalismo, devido às diversas transformações ao nível da tipologia, que se traduziu num acrescido interesse pelos modelos da antiguidade clássica, desde a uniformização dos ritmos à decoração. Renasce um novo motivo arquitectónico, isto é, a reabilitação termal passa a ser valorizada e tida em consideração devido à contemporaneidade relacionada com os novos materiais, a estética e aquilo que é funcional.

Thermal entitled Architecture - Restoration and Protection of Termas de Melgaço, this paper intends to analyze the concepts and architectural typologies and their origin and thermal evolution in history. The issue became from the desire and curiosity to study how they came, what they were and why they become so sought architecture, a relentless pursuit to realize its entire history. We begin by studying its origin at the time of the Chaldeans and Romans, and then some contemporary case studies, so in the end we could conduct the case study. We note that the term “spa” was first used by the Romans to rank sites for the public baths. Body hygienc and therapy through the water medicinal purposes were two of these baths. During the second half of the eighteenth century, we are faced with a great development of Hydrotherapy, due to several changes in terms of typology, which resulted in increased interest in models of classical antiquity, since the standardization of rates for decoration. Reborn a new architectural motif, the thermal rehabilitation shall be valued and taken into consideration due related to the conternporary new materials, aesthetics and what is functional.
