A arquitectura para o corpo : do balneário romano ao spa

Abstract

A dissertação que agora se apresenta, centra-se no estudo do SPA e a sua arquitectura. Questionamos a sua existência e proliferação na actualidade. Quisemos saber o que é um SPA, que modelos a escolher, como se projectam e edificam. Na pesquisa que encetamos, reunimos informação bastante, que nos permite estabelecer parâmetros de comparação com o passado e civilizações no mundo. Destacamos as termas/balneários romanos como auge de uma civilização urbana, de certo modo equiparável ao que acontece na sociedade ocidental de hoje. A arquitectura do SPA vive da água. Privilegia o corpo. É exclusivo de quem usufrui do ócio e do lazer. Em Portugal, verificamos a mesma tendência. Projectar um hotel/SPA para uma pedreira em Fervença/Barcelos, foi um desafio, uma aprendizagem e justifica-se plenamente. Foi à conclusão a que chegamos, depois da hipótese levantada, da revisão à literatura na moda e em voga, mas, também, apoiada em trabalhos de investigação conduzidos, como pós-graduações, mestrados e doutoramentos.

The dissertation that will be presented is centered on the study of SPA and their architecture. We question their existence and proliferation nowadays. We wanted to know what it is and in which way they are projected and built. In the research made, we were able to assemble quite a lot of information that allowed us to established parameters of comparison between the past and other world civilization.We give an special attention to the Roman baths as a peak of the urban civilization, that is in a certain way very similar to what happens in the western world in today’s times. SPA’s architecture lives from the water. It privileges the body. Is practiced by those who can, in idleness and leisure. In Portugal the tendency is identical. Design a hotel + SPA that would architecturally fit the Fervença/Barcelos’s quarry, was a challenge, a major learning tool and was totally justified. That was the conclusion we came to, after reviewing the trendy literature, but also supported by some dissertations of post-graduates students, masters and doctorates.
