A influência da urbanística inglesa na cidade do Porto : o plano de Barry Parker

Abstract

O plano traçado por Barry Parker (1867-1947) para o centro da cidade do Porto, revela novas soluções formais e métodos inovadores que estiveram na origem das «cidades-jardim», (Letchworth e Hampstead), e compiladas por Raymond Unwin (1863- 1940), no seu tratado de desenho urbano, «Town Planning in the Practice», (1909). O início do debate teórico anunciado no final do século XIX, estará bem presente na estratégia que Parker desenhou para «refundar o centro da cidade», reflectido no pensamento teórico, bastante coerente com o modelo urbano subjacente. Esta clara influência da recente produção urbanística inglesa, permitirá compreender as aproximações, distanciamentos e ajustes dos princípios daquele tipo de desenho urbano no Plano que traçou para o novo centro cívico da cidade do Porto.

The plan drawn by Barry Parker (1867-1947) for the centre of the city of Oporto, reveals new formal solutions and innovatory methods that were in the origin of the «citiesgardens», (Letchworth and Hampstead), and when «Town Planning in of Practice», (1909) were compiled by Raymond Unwin (1863-1940), in his treaty of urbane drawing. The beginning of the theoretical discussion announced in the end of the century XIX, it wiIl be quite present in the strategy that Parker drew «to deepen the centre of the city», thought ahout the theoretical, quite coherent thought with the urbane underlying model. This clear influence of the recent town planning English production, it will allow to understand the approximations, distancing and agreements of the beginnings of that type of urbane drawing in the Plan that it drew for the new civic centre of the city of Oporto.
