Abstract: We have approached the historical centres of towns focusing on their habitational concerns in order to understand what led to the decline of these centres and what provoked their desertification by the resident population. We have also approached the theme of humanization and the concept of Permeable Neighbourhoods, linked to the habitational question in which the transitional spaces between the street and the habitation are referred to. Finally, we analysed interventions that have been made to the interior of neighbourhoods in order to develop an intervention strategy for the historical centre of Amarante. We have analysed chronologically the concerns about historical centres, perceiving when the first concerns about the living conditions of the local populations arose and later we analyse what led to desertification by the resident population and how important it is to return habitants to these centres. We relate the theme of humanization to the concept of permeable neighbourhoods seeking for solutions to the current problem of desertification, contrasting this with what has been done in some neighbourhoods. With the information obtained, I developed a proposal for the humanization of the historical centre of Amarante through the introduction of a System of Permeable Neighbourhoods. We have realized that the habitational function of the historical centre is important in the measure that it is this that confers its identity and makes it distinct from the others. As such, the interior of the neighbourhoods considered to be transitional spaces need to be accessible by the people who live there, seeking to respond to their needs through functional diversity. By introducing the Permeable Neighbourhood System in Amarante we realize that each neighbourhood should offer a solution to one or more needs, receiving the function that supports this same necessity and being interlinked with the remaining neighbourhoods which have distinct functions. The population has a natural access to the spaces in the historical centre when they participate in the functions that form a town.
