No Capítulo I, analisa-se a o Movimento Moderno, nomeadamente a escola Bahaus e vida do arquiteto Adolf Loos.
Abstract: Adolf Loos, architect, designer and theoretician, was the precursor of modern architectural concepts. His architecture clearly showed the influence of the Modern Movement and his critical view of society. He caused great controversy, and although he built very few works, he left his mark in XXth century architecture. The object of this investigation is to study the approach to modern architectural influences and the way in which they are implicit in the contemporary concept of single family housing. The general structure of this dissertation is based on four fundamental parts. The first part covers the introduction, in which the adopted method is presented and the research theme. In Chapter 1, the Modern Movement is analysed, namely the Bahaus school and the life of the architect. The aim is to get to know his influences, the ideals he defended, the innovative concepts he introduced to architecture as well as his most important works namely the Villa Muller. In this chapter there is also a reference to the “Adolf Loos: our contemporary” exhibition, whose central element is a series of conversations that Yehuda Zafran had with various architects from the four continents of the world. In Chapter 2, the programme for this case study is presented, as well as the historic context of surrounding area, Granja. In the Conclusion of this dissertation, we come to realise that Adolf Loos and Modernism continue to influence contemporary architecture, as can be verified in the case study and the “Adolf Loos: our contemporary” exhibiton. Despite all the controversy that Loos caused during his life, almost a century later the Raumplaun, the theory of non ornamentation, the antagonist relationship between interior/exterior and the “terracing” concept continue to perpetuate in the history of architecture.
