Our research analyses United Nations Security Council Resolution 2728, adopted on March 25, 2024, which determines an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the Ramadan period, in an interdisciplinary approach to Law and International Relations, under the theoretical lens of the realist paradigm of International Relations. Although the resolution is legally binding under the aegis of Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, we see that its application faced obstacles due to the national interests of the States involved and the anarchy of the international system, as foreseen by the realist paradigm of International Relations. Using documentary analysis in this case study, our investigation will analyze the vote, state reactions, and the absence of coercive mechanisms for the implementation of the resolution. We will conclude that the effectiveness of the resolution is limited by the primacy of state power and the resistance of key state actors such as Israel and the USA. |
