In the 21st century, talking about the Internet has become synonymous with referring to something indispensable for the majority of the global population. Nowadays, imagining a world without this communication network is a difficult task, as members of global society rely on it across a wide range of domains. However, unregulated Internet use particularly Generalized Problematic Internet Use (GPIU) has been associated with harmful effects on behavioral, cognitive, emotional, social, and subjective well-being dimensions. The present study aims to characterize and analyze the differences and associations between emotional regulation, subjective well-being, and GPIU in the adult population. In this cross-sectional, correlational quantitative study, 195 individuals participated 129 identified as female and 63 as male. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 81 years (M=41; SD=12). Data collection instruments included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (EUGPI2), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale – Short Form (EDRE-VR), the WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment), and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS II).A moderate association was found between the EUGPI2 and the following EDRE-VR dimensions: strategies (rs =.405, p<.001), emotional clarity (rs= .422, p<.001), impulse control (rs =.421, p<.001), and goal-directed behavior (rs =.400, p<.001). A statistically significant and moderately negative correlation was also found between EUGPI2 and subjective well-being (rs=-.310, p<.001). Statistically significant differences were found between participants with GPIU and those without, in terms of dimensions, goals, clarity, strategies, and impulses (p<.001), as well as awareness and non-acceptance (p=.002). A similar pattern was observed in subjective well-being (mean rank=76.21; U=2778.00, p<.001). No statistically significant gender differences were found in relation to GPIU (p=.284). The findings suggest that individuals with GPIU exhibit lower levels of both subjective well-being and emotional regulation compared to individuals without GPIU. |
