This dissertation focuses on reflecting upon the role of contemporary architecture in interventions involving ruins, with a particular emphasis on analyzing possible approaches to archaeological ruins. It seeks to establish a relationship between the needs of contemporary interventions and the historical and symbolic significance of ruins, aiming to determine the most appropriate approach for this type of archaeological heritage. The research intends to investigate how architects can intervene in ancient buildings, whether in ruins or not, to address the current needs of society. In a context where the practice of heritage restoration and rehabilitation has been growing, it is observed that many interventions tend to prioritize the preservation of appearance over historical significance and the ways of life of the past. Thus, the primary goal of this investigation is to understand how architects can intervene in ancient buildings, aligning their actions with contemporary needs while respecting the inherent historical and symbolic values. Within this scope, the following questions are posed: Should we restore or conserve a ruin? Restore or intervene? For what purpose do we act? To protect it? To interpret it? The dissertation is organized into five main sections: Introduction, The Ruin, Intervention in Ruins, Reference Cases, and Final Considerations. This work seeks to interpret the site and the built environment using the tools of architecture, with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of these locations through their reconstruction and enhancement. Ultimately, it aims to comprehend the ability of contemporary architecture to reinterpret and enhance ruins as significant elements of heritage. Each chapter summarizes and organizes the knowledge accumulated throughout architectural practice on this topic, providing a theoretical and practical foundation that enables a deeper understanding of the methodologies and approaches applied to ruins. These contemporary interventions, beyond reconfiguring the meaning of ruins, often transcend the purely architectural scope, influencing the concept of ruins as material objects. These objects relate not only to the function and use of the new building but also to the choice of materials and construction systems, fostering a connection between past and present. Finally, in the fifth chapter, Final Considerations, the dissertation presents its overall conclusions, addressing the objectives and methodologies outlined throughout the work. This chapter reflects on the possibilities and challenges contemporary architecture faces when intervening in ruins, proposing contributions to architectural practice in this field.
