Visões distópicas da cidade : uma leitura através do cinema

Abstract

A investigação tem por objecto o olhar do cinema sobre a cidade sob uma vertente distópica, com incidência nas duas primeiras e nas duas últimas décadas do século XX e início do século XXI. O estudo recai cronologicamente sob dois períodos de transição de século tendo em consideração, naturalmente, o período do aparecimento do cinema e a relação que estabelece com a cidade; e um momento posterior, em que a relação do cinema com a cidade evoluiu sob um prisma distópico. O principal objectivo é analisar o vínculo entre a cidade, resultante da industrialização, e o cinema, através de uma retrospectiva que demonstra como a imagem cinematográfica acompanhou a transformação das cidades no início do século XX e, como isso se reflectiu na representação do espaço urbano conduzindo a visões urbanas distópicas, sobretudo, no final do século XX e princípio do século XXI. Ao analisarmos os parâmetros do discurso distópico relativamente à cidade procuramos averiguar a razão pela qual, a representação da cidade caminhou no sentido de ausência de perspectiva de vida na cidade nos filmes de ficção científica. No âmbito da pesquisa, a distopia é considerada como um instrumento de leitura que origina a invenção de uma cidade ou mundo, possível a partir do presente que se conhece em paralelo com o futuro que se receia, que permite identificar os anseios e preocupações face às novas dinâmicas sociais que se fazem presentes na sociedade. O cinema, por sua vez, é tido como um instrumento de leitura da realidade histórica, cultural e social, na qual o vínculo entre o homem, o espaço e o tempo foram profundamente alterados com a modernidade.

The object of this research is the cinematic view of the city from a dystopian perspective, focusing on the first two and last two decades of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The study falls chronologically under two transition periods of the century, taking into consideration, naturally, the period of the appearance of cinema and the relationship it establishes with the city; and a later moment, in which the relationship of cinema with the city evolved under a dystopian perspective. The main objective is to analyse the link between the city, resulting from industrialization, and cinema, through a retrospective that demonstrates how the cinematographic image accompanied the transformation of cities in the early twentieth century, and how this was reflected in the representation of urban space leading to dystopian urban visions, especially in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. By analysing the parameters of the dystopian discourse regarding the city, we try to ascertain why the representation of the city has moved in the direction of an absence of perspective of city life in science fiction films. In the scope of the research, dystopia is considered as a reading tool that originates the invention of a city or world, possible from the present that is known in parallel with the future that is feared, which allows the identification of anxieties and concerns in face of the new social dynamics that are present in society. Cinema, in turn, is seen as an instrument for reading historical, cultural, and social reality, in which the bond between man, space, and time has been profoundly altered with modernity.
