There has been an increase in the interest of the Social Sciences in the theme of social inclusion in and by sport. However, there are limited studies in the national social work field about the importance of the socio-sports experience in the construction of identities, cultures and informal spaces for youth empowerment, in contexts of social vulnerability. 'Ball, mandinga and pirouettes stars' consists of a comprehensive ethnography which, by using on-site observation in a Lisbon “social neighbourhood”, Padre Cruz neighbourhood (BPC), was able to identify the pratice models proposed by the local socio-sports community, the turning points of youth identity construction and the identity ideal types produced by the experiences lived by the youth, within the framework of various community projects that use street soccer, capoeira, hip hop dance and social circus as collaborative tools of mediation and informal education for citizenship. This immersion allowed the understanding of the multiple contexts where youth identities develop, their trajectories, communities and sociabilities, the experience and attempts to overcome vulnerabilities, in the informal spaces of sports leisure. This study is expected to contribute to a greater visibility of the identity processes, self-regulation and youth empowerment made possible by the socio-sports experience, explaining the implications for the promotion of social inclusion, the legitimization of youth identities and for the development of theoretical and practical tools in the field of community social work in and urban context.
