A propósito da instauração da República : contributo para uma história da relação entre os poderes temporal e espiritual

Abstract

Partindo da evidente contradição que atravessou toda a primeira república portuguesa na forma de encarar as relações entre o Estado e a religião, contradição essa que se mostra, ao mesmo tempo, essencial e inconsciente, afirmo aqui a necessidade urgente de reflectir sobre a história da relação entre os poderes temporal e espiritual. A relação entre estes dois poderes, com efeito, longe de caracterizar apenas a estrutura mental que funda e justifica a realidade social da Idade Média, como normalmente se pretende, faz natural ou necessariamente parte da organização social dos seres humanos diversamente realizada na história, como aqui pretendo mostrar. A Idade Moderna, porém, embora nascendo da necessidade do estabelecimento de uma nova forma de relacionar estes dois poderes, veio a negar o carácter estruturante que a sua relação natural e historicamente assume em todas as sociedades humanas, deste modo reduzindo o ser humano – e, consequentemente, a sua felicidade – àquilo que ele pode apenas mediata e objectiamente ser. É neste sentido, portanto, que penso que a história da relação entre os poderes temporal e espiritual, a qual se encontra por fazer, é fundamental para bem compreender a Idade Moderna e, consequentemente, os caminhos que diante de nós se abrem neste início do século XXI.

Questioning the obvious contradiction that pervaded all the Portuguese first republic concerning the way to deal with the relations between State end Religion – contradiction that reveals itself both essential and unconscious –, I affirm, on this article, the urgent necessity to reflect upon the history of the relation between temporal and spiritual powers. The relation between these two powers, effectively, far from characterizing solely the mental structure that founds and justifies the social reality of the middle age, as it is normally claimed, makes naturally or necessarily part of the social organization of human beings diversely accomplished in history, as I here want to demonstrate. Modern age, however, although arising from the necessity of establishing a new form of relating these two powers, came to deny the structuring character that this relation naturally and historically assumes in all human societies, thus reducing the human being – and, consequently, his own happiness – to what he can only mediately and objectively be. It is, therefore, in this sense that I think that the history of the relation between temporal and spiritual powers – history that remains to be done – is fundamental to a good understanding of the modern age and, consequently, of the paths that open themselves before us in this beginning of the XXI century.
