A Luz e o Silêncio na Arquitectura

Abstract

Resumo: A temática desta dissertação incide sobre a luz e o silêncio, dois elementos muito importantes na arquitetura. A luz é essencial à existência de vida e permite o uso do nosso sentido de visão. O silêncio funciona como a capacidade que o Homem tem de interpretar o espaço e através da sua mente, incorporar o lugar. É este elemento que permite harmonia entre o espaço e os materiais que o caraterizam, já que a nossa leitura do objeto arquitetónico, apenas é válida com a compreensão da nossa experiência. A arquitetura bem concebida tem o poder de se fazer ouvir e sentir. Deste modo, em termos teóricos analisamos a importância destes elementos tendo por base as contribuições dadas por Louis I. Kahn e Raúl Hestnes Ferreira. Assim por forma a validar as teorias destes dois arquitetos analisamos o edifício da Igreja Unitária, em Rochester, e a Casa da Cultura e Juventude de Beja, em Beja. Tendo em conta os elementos luz e silêncio e as obras anteriormente referidas, foi possível desenvolvermos a parte projetual aplicando a investigação realizada. Como resultado da investigação proposta sublinha-se a importância que a luz e o silêncio têm na arquitetura e a contribuição que Louis I. Kahn e Hestnes Ferreira nos deixam, para a compreensão destes dois elementos no espaço.

The topic of this dissertation focuses on light and silence, two very important elements in architecture. Light is essential to the existence of life and it allows us the use of our sense of sight. Silence functions as the capacity that man has to read space and through his mind to incorporate the place. It is this element that allows harmony between the space and the materials that characterize it, since our reading of the architectural object is only valid with the understanding of our experience. Well-designed architecture has the power to make itself heard and felt. In this way, in theoretical terms we analyze the importance of these elements based on the contributions given by Louis I. Kahn and Raúl Hestnes Ferreira. So, in order to validate the theories of these two architects we analyze the Unitarian Church building in Rochester and the House of Culture and Youth of Beja in Beja. Taking into account the elements light and silence and the works previously mentioned, it was possible to develop the design part applying the research carried out. As a result of the proposed research it is emphasized the importance that light and silence have in architecture and the contribution that Louis I. Kahn and Hestnes Ferreira gave us to understand these two elements in space.
