O envolvimento escolar em crianças e jovens com condições neuromuscoloesqueléticas

Abstract

O Envolvimento Escolar é um componente essencial na experiência escolar e tem atraído crescente atenção, nomeadamente em alunos com Necessidades Educativas Especiais. No entanto pouco se sabe acerca do envolvimento dos alunos com a escola numa perspetiva multidimensional em alunos com necessidades educativas especiais, mais especificamente alunos com condições neuromusculoesqueléticas. As graves limitações que estes sujeitos apresentam (muitas vezes associadas a dificuldades de índole cognitiva) terão possivelmente implicações ao nível do modo como são estruturados os processos das relações e a predisposição para a aprendizagem. Tendo em conta a singularidade da sua condição (propiciando uma experiência social em muitos aspetos diversa da que caracteriza a criança normal) torna-se relevante saber se existem diferenças no envolvimento com a escola, tendo em conta as ligações psicológicas dentro do ambiente académico, físico e social. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o envolvimento escolar em alunos com condições neuromusculoesqueléticas. Participaram no estudo 14 alunos, com condições neuromusculoesqueléticas e 238 alunos sem necessidades educativas especiais, do 1.°, 2.° e 3° Ciclos do Ensino Básico e Escolas Secundárias da região norte. O Envolvimento Escolar foi avaliado através da versão portuguesa do Student Engagement Instrument (SEI; Appleton & Christenson, 2004). Os resultados revelaram que os alunos com condições neuromusculoesqueléticas apresentam índices superiores nas dimensões de controle e relevância do trabalho escolar e na perceção de apoio dos professores à aprendizagem. Estes resultados contribuem para uma melhor compreensão do envolvimento dos alunos com condições neuromusculoesqueléticas com a escola.

Abstract: Tbe School Engagement is an essential component of the school experience and has attracted increasing attention, especially in students with Special Educational Needs. However little is known about the engagement of students in a school with a multidimensional perspective on students with special needs, specifically children with neuromuscular disorders. The severe limitations that these guys have (often associated with cognitive difficulties) will have implications of the way processes are structured relations and the willingness to learn. Given the uniqueness of’ their condition (providing a social experience in many aspects different from that which characterizes the normal child) becomes relevant whether there are differences in school engagement, taking into account the psychological connections within the academic environrnent, physical and social. The objective of this study was to evaluate the engagement of school students with neuromuscular disorders. 14 students participated in the study, with neuromuscular disorders and 238 students without special needs, from 1 frts, 2snd, and 3rd grade of primary schools and secondary schools in the northern region. The school engagement was assessed using the Portuguese version of the Student Engagement lnstrument (SEI; Appleton & Christenson, 2004). The results revealed that students with neuromuscular disorders present a higher rate in the dimensions of control and relevance of school work and the perception of teacher support for learning. These results contribute to a better understanding of the engagement of students with neuromuscular disorders with the school.
