| pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Excessive use of the internet and social media is often associated with negative consequences for self-esteem and social comparison, potentially affecting the mental health of university students. The present quantitative study aims to investigate the relationship between internet addiction, social media addiction, self-esteem, and social comparison orientation among university students. A total of 170 university students participated in this study (141 female and 29 male), aged between 18 and 30 years. The methodological design included the administration of five instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Internet Addiction Scale, Social Media Addiction Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Social Comparison Orientation Scale. The results revealed significant associations between: (1) social media addiction and selfesteem, (2) internet addiction and social comparison, (3) social media addiction and social comparison, and (4) social comparison and self-esteem. Significant differences were also observed in one of the subscales of the Social Media Addiction Scale – compulsive feelings – according to gender, with females presenting a higher mean score. Additionally, significant differences were found regarding the number of hours spent using the internet, the number of hours spent on social media, and the frequency of posting content on social media within their respective groups. The findings showed that the greater the number of hours spent on the internet and social media, the higher the levels of compulsive feelings and social consequences. | pt_PT |
