The article examines the Portuguese Constitutional Charter of 1826 within the broader framework of Iberian liberal constitutionalism, highlighting its role as the foundational text that structured Portuguese liberalism throughout the nineteenth century. After contextualizing the Revolution of 1820 a the Constitution of 1822 –shaped by the Cádiz model and grounded in national sovereignty and the separation of powers – the study analyses the genesis of the Charter granted by Pedro IV, influenced by the French harter of 1814 and by Benjamin Constant’s doctrine of the moderating power. The author emphasizes that the Charter, “the constitutional text with the longest period of validity among the six adopted in the history of Portugal”, combined monarchical and liberal elements, enabling significant institutional stability, particularly after the Regeneration and the Additional Acts of 1852. The article also addresses the influence of the international context, the role of political exile, the septembrismo movement and the Constitution of 1838, as well as the final crisis of the constitutional monarchy, accelerated by the British ultimatum of 1890 and persistent financial instability. From a comparative perspective, the study highlights the parallels and divergences between Portugal and Spain in their transition from absolutism to moderate liberalism.
