José António Guerreiro (1789-1834) : de vintista a cartista

Abstract

José António Guerreiro foi magistrado e um político determinante para a implantação do constitucionalismo moderno em Portugal, tendo desempenhado elevados cargos políticos, como o de deputado (constituinte e ordinário), vice-presidente da Câmara dos Deputados, ministro da Justiça e conselheiro de Estado. No seu cursus honorum, começou por ser um vintista radical, mas rapidamente se moderou, convertendo-se ao cartismo e à bandeira da Carta Constitucional, pela qual pugnou até ao último dia da sua vida, como veremos neste estudo.

José António Guerreiro was a magistrate and a pivotal politician in the establishment of modern constitutionalism in Portugal, having held high political offices, such as deputy (both constituent and ordinary), vice-president of the Câmara dos Deputados, Minister of Justice, and member of the Council of State. In his cursus honorum, he began as a radical vintista but quickly moderated, converting to the cartista movement and to the banner of the Constitutional Charter, which he defended until the last day of his life, as we will see in this study.
