      <title>A casa como gesto : a arquitectura e a filosofia em diálogo</title>

      <description>Título: A casa como gesto : a arquitectura e a filosofia em diálogo
Autor: Bucha, Luís Carlos
Resumo: No embalo do ensaio da filósofa portuguesa Maria Filomena Molder, intitulado A Arquitectura é um gesto (2021), consideramos uma possibilidade de diálogo entre a arquitectura e a filosofia, assente num entendimento que se tece em torno das noções de Casa, de Gesto; em síntese, de Casa como Gesto.&#xD;
Esta premissa alude, de outro modo, à leitura de Molder sobre a arquitectura, do ponto de vista do pensamento filosófico, e, neste caso, em diálogo com as considerações tecidas pelo filósofo (e arquitecto) austríaco Ludwig Wittgenstein, num discurso filosófico que encadeia a teoria da linguagem e a arquitectura.&#xD;
Por intermédio deste ensaio de Molder, como também de outras referências teóricas provenientes tanto do domínio da arquitectura, como da filosofia, a compreensão da noção de Gesto, por sua vez, permitir-nos-á repensar a noção de Casa enquanto facto arquitectónico, pois entendemos que essa noção admite um horizonte de (re)significação em fluxo de pensamento, sugerindo um diálogo crítico. Esse diálogo crítico permite reconfigurar a ideia de Casa, a qual, interrogada por via do desenho (arquitectónico) sugere, como relembra o arquitecto português Álvaro Siza Vieira, uma expressão cruzada de gestos “carregados de história, de inconsciente memória, de incalculável, anónima sabedoria”.&#xD;

      <title>Architecture as a verb and the Japanese Insularity : (a)metamorphosis as an act of creation</title>
      <link>http://hdl.handle.net/11067/8793</link>
      <description>Título: Architecture as a verb and the Japanese Insularity : (a)metamorphosis as an act of creation
Autor: Soares, Maria João dos Reis Moreira, 1964-; Duarte, João Miguel Couto, 1966-
Resumo: The relationship between Japan and the rest of the world has been observed based on the view that they oppose each other. Claude Lévi-Strauss speaks of the existence of a symmetry. In the case of architecture, that idea is clarified further by Ryue Nishizawa, when he says that the architecture of the eastern islands, including Japan, is a “verb” and that the architecture of the west is a “noun”. Creation in architecture is intertwined with the idea of metamorphosis. However, in Japanese architecture, the idea of symmetry makes it possible to understand architectural creation based on an idea of (a)metamorphosis. That possibility is strengthened by the singularity of Japanese architecture, to which the country's insularity and the fact that its architecture is based on the reiteration of long-standing conceptual and building principles and the relationship between humans and nature all contribute. As a “verb”, Japanese architecture has no form and is accordingly alien to the possibility of metamorphosis.&#xD;
This paper seeks to explore the consequences of the crossing of the principle of architecture as a verb proposed by Nishizawa with the idea of the dissolution of boundaries between architecture and the environment, linking both said principle and that idea with the condition of Japan’s insularity. For Japanese architecture, (a) metamorphosis is an act of creation.

      <title>The Katsura Imperial Villa in the Japan of Carlo Scarpa and Fernando Távora</title>
      <link>http://hdl.handle.net/11067/8789</link>
      <description>Título: The Katsura Imperial Villa in the Japan of Carlo Scarpa and Fernando Távora
Autor: Soares, Maria João dos Reis Moreira, 1964-; Duarte, João Miguel Couto, 1966-
Resumo: Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) and Fernando Távora (1923-2005) are key figures for understanding the architecture of Italy and Portugal in the second half of the twentieth century. The two architects are also linked by their shared interest in Japanese culture. Távora visited Japan in 1960; Scarpa in 1969, and again in 1978. They both visited the Katsura Imperial Villa. The drawings that Távora made at the time and the notes he took about the villa reveal a certain awe and fascination. Távora confirmed that all of the so-called Modern was there. The accounts of Scarpa’s visit to the villa show an almost religious and, at all times, contagious enthusiasm, which was confirmed by his son, Tobia Scarpa (b. 1935). The paper aims to compare Japan’s meanings and architecture in the works of Carlo Scarpa and Fernando Távora, based on their visits to Katsura Imperial Villa. It revisits the modernity of this seventeenth-century Japanese architectural masterpiece.
