<title>Developing intermodal freight transport solution to boat industry</title>
    <link>http://hdl.handle.net/11067/7401</link>
<description>Título: Developing intermodal freight transport solution to boat industry
Autor: Rodrigues, Liliana; Oliveira, Lia Coelho de
Resumo: A company in the boat industry transferred production of boats from a facility in Poland to a facility in Portugal. This transfer happens due to capacity constraints in the origin facility. Trucking the boats from Portugal to Scandinavia (main market) was very expensive and representing an increase of greenhouse as emissions. In this context was developed this project with the goal to find a cheaper solution to deliver boats to Scandinavia that at the same time could offer a more environmentally sustainable alternative. For some boat models (the smaller ones) were analysed the possibility to fit 2 boats in a container. If we could use containers to ship boats by sea and complement last mile with road transport, we might have big impact on freight. Investigations were done comparing both solutions and freight costs. When we verified that it was possible, we had also to analyse the unloading condition at the destination. How the customers will unload the boats from the container. Which equipment will be needed. Some tests were performed, and a special platform were developed to help the customer at unloading moment. This platform needs to be sent inside container to each customer at the first shipment. Will be reused for the next ones. The last point to take in account was the fact that the container must be on the floor in order customer can pull out the boats, for that the delivery of the container must be done with a side loader. After this investigation new calculations were done to have all associated costs. Project was tested and implemented afterwards for 3 different boat models. The saving of 60% in freight comparing with initial solution were one of the main advantages.

<title>Supply Chain 2.0 : the concept evolution in response to market changes</title>

<description>Título: Supply Chain 2.0 : the concept evolution in response to market changes
Autor: Macelo, Leonardo; Oliveira, Lia Coelho de
Resumo: The Supply Chain initial concept has been suffering mutations from its base. This has been adjusted by the fact that supply chains need to be supported on pillars that are speed, calable, intelligent, and strategically connected. Disruptions in traditional supply chains based on geopolitical conflicts in Eastern Europe, the COVID-19 epidemic and unstable national economies have demonstrated the need to apply key pillars and techniques in restructuring supply chains. According to the literature review of concepts explored by several authors it’s possible to identify and support the existence of an association with the concept of industry 4.0. As a consequence of the emergence of fourth industrial revolution (known for the application of industry 4.0) the concept of traditional Supply Chain went directly to Supply Chain 4.0, which leads to the belief that there were the second and third stages. It should be noted that the new version of the supply chain (Supply Chain 2.0) is influenced by the existence of Industry 4.0, but this does not sustain the omission of the intermediate stages. Based on the literature review, the main techniques, and strategies to be used in the restructuring of upply chains were identified, namely procurement and purchasing associated with supply chain capacity, redundancy and flexibility as risk mitigation strategies and the definition of the centre of gravity of supply chains that addresses factors related to suppliers and demand.

<title>Optimization and flexibility of the stock management process of a consumables warehouse : the case of Toyota Caetano Portugal</title>

Resumo: The world is changing rapidly, and the supply chain has suffered a shock. The management of human talent has never had such an impact as it does today, and the survival of industries is now related to their competitiveness, which is influenced by their productivity level. This is maximized through investments in innovation related to both technology and the operational components, and by means of new working methods with the application of continuous improvement tools. The work described in this paper took place in this context and was carried out in the consumables warehouse of Toyota Caetano Portugal S.A. (Ovar plant), with the objective of developing a new management method. The project was developed in five stages: (1) analysis of the initial situation - AS IS, and design of -TO BE, using Toyota Production System (TPS) tools; (2) ABC analysis based on the last four years' consumption; (3) development and implementation of a new warehouse layout, with the respective identification of locations and product labelling; (4) insertion of data into the company’s enterprise resources planning (ERP) concerning locations and quantities in stock. These changes enabled a reduction of about 84% in the time spent by the operator in the retrieval of picking lists. In stage 5, a model for the management of consumable stocks was developed, based on the analysis of the last seven months’ consumption, daily average consumption and lead times, after defining the values of safety stocks and reorder points, to avoid failures and/or delays of material and consequent production stoppages and even the existence of obsolete stocks.

<title>Application of SMED to reduce parameterization times in the production of corrugated carton packaging</title>

<description>Título: Application of SMED to reduce parameterization times in the production of corrugated carton packaging

Resumo: Companies are constantly enhancing their processes and operations to improve productivity while reducing costs. This has led many companies to implement a Lean Production philosophy. Lean Production involves a multi-level process to identify and prioritize the waste as non-value-adding activities, providing recommendations to reduce and/or eliminate them. This work was carried out in an industrial company dedicated to the production of corrugated carton boxes for several sectors, whereas, the main objective was the application of Lean Production principles and tools and to control setup times while minimizing the production cycle time. The production line under study corresponds to an automatic case-maker machine that converts cardboard plates into different box formats through automatic printing, cutting, slotting, creasing and collage processes. Each production order requires a specific parametrization process, which consumes a considerable amount of time and human resources. Thus, a time study was carried out to identify all the operations, controls, stops and movements through sequence diagrams. With the collected data, the SMED tool was applied to reduce the setup times of the case makers. With the application of SMED, it was possible to reduce the setup time by 28% for production orders with cutting tools and 39.6% for production orders without cutting tools. With this analysis, the company can release one of the three operators at the automatic production line to perform other value-added operations.
