    <title>Heuristics in inventory control : operational empirical evidence</title>

    <description>Título: Heuristics in inventory control : operational empirical evidence
Autor: Lopes, José Álvaro da Cruz de Assis, 1947-; Matos, José Manuel Loução de
Resumo: This paper intends to be a methodological contribution to the comparison of results obtained inventory management through formal modeling and those implemented through simulation and optimization processes, particularly using genetic algorithms (evolutionary). The development focuses primarily on backorder situation for models of reorder point, periodic review and (S, s, R) where the demand per unit time and lead time are normal distributions. The analyses are realized for a set of heuristics applied to the management of a durable fast moving item. The main limitations in modeling and optimization of numerical nature are refereed.

    <title>Emergy evaluation of an open cycle gas cogeneration system</title>

    <description>Título: Emergy evaluation of an open cycle gas cogeneration system
Autor: Oliveira, Carlos Alberto Rego de; Gomes, José; Martins, Cecília Maria Alves Torres
Resumo: The development of this work aimed the emergy evaluation of an open cycle gas cogeneration power plant. This study also sought to assess the emergy efficiency of the cogeneration process in question, and, in addition to the energy flows, the quantification of the flows of matter, services and information involved in the production of steam and electrical power. The obtained emergy table shows that the non-renewable resources are the main contributors to the total flow of emergy required by the system, and renewable resources are the ones that contribute the least to the emergy of the system. Results indicate that the process has a considerable dependence on economic resources and the energy producer is harmed when selling energy because he gives more emergy than that he receives from money. Results also show that the process has a large dependence on the non-renewable resources, and therefore is not sustainable in the long term, from the standpoint of emergy.

    <title>Is there a European convergence in HRM practices? : a cluster analysis of the high-performance paradigm across 31 countries</title>

    <description>Título: Is there a European convergence in HRM practices? : a cluster analysis of the high-performance paradigm across 31 countries
Autor: Ferreira, Pedro
Resumo: Is there a European convergence in HRM practices? A cluster analysis of the high-performance paradigm across 31 countries.&#xD;
The High-Performance paradigm can be seen as a set of new forms of work organization combined with flexible HR practices that enhance organizational performance through employee involvement and empowerment. With roots in the American HR tradition, there is an ongoing debate on its universal applicability between what has been called the universalist and the contigent perspectives. Based on this debate, the main goal of this paper is to test if there is a general approach to the High-Performance paradigm, common to all European countries or if it is possible to find different profiles of high-performance practices within Europe. The results show that there is not a single bundle that reflects one “system” of work and HR practices. Cluster analysis revealed three clusters and the distribution of countries by clusters shows a distinct geographical pattern: South-West Europe, South-Eastern Europe and Northern Europe, the latter being more close to the High-Performance paradigm.

    <title>Definition and a conceptual model for organizational schizophrenia</title>

    <description>Título: Definition and a conceptual model for organizational schizophrenia
Autor: Oliveira, Maria Elizabeth Faria Real de
Resumo: The main purpose of this research paper is to understand and define the concept, scope and dimensions of organisational schizophrenia. This concept is argued to be of valuable importance for the field of human resources. A definition of organisational schizophrenia is presented both by addressing existing literature and also from applying a qualitative exploratory approach using focus group discussion and interviews. The main conclusions of this research are that organisational schizophrenia is an important concept that should be further clarified and studied. From the focus group there is some agreement that the analogy is very useful for understanding some phenomena within the organizational behaviour realm. Actually, organisational schizophrenia is more than just a metaphor, since its understanding can result in practical implications, such as identifying symptoms and the application of corrective actions.
