Adicionalmente, os autores cruzam o valor geopolítico da região do Estreito de Malaca com a Belt and Road Initiative, relevando-se o impacto da pirataria nesta mesma iniciativa.; The authors seek to analyze the dynamics of piracy in the Strait of Malacca, one of the most important and busiest sea lanes in the world, essential for international trade. The authors divide this study into three main parts: a definition of the concept of piracy based on a literature review, a discussion of the geopolitical value of the Strait of Malacca and the “Malacca dilemma”, and a specific analysis of piracy in the region. In addition, the authors take into consideration the geopolitical value of the Malacca Strait region within the Belt and Road Initiative, highlighting the impact of piracy on this initiative.

    <summary type="text">Título: O papel da China na segurança marítima de África
Autor: Alexandre, António Gonçalves
Resumo: O oceano mundial é vital para o desenvolvimento económico da China, que emergiu, no presente século, como um ator-chave em sectores críticos do domínio marítimo (como o transporte marítimo internacional ou a pesca). Em relação aos espaços marítimos de África, tanto a costa oriental como a costa ocidental são fundamentais para a obtenção e/ou transporte dos recursos (sobretudo energéticos e minerais) de que a China necessita para o crescimento económico que pretende alcançar. Para garantir a segurança daqueles espaços marítimos, Pequim tem vindo a expandir a sua pegada militar naval além-fronteiras e a desenvolver significativas capacidades de projeção de poder.&#xD;
Assente num quadro epistemológico interpretativista, com base numa estratégia de investigação qualitativa e um raciocínio do tipo indutivo, este artigo procura responder, a partir de um estudo de caso, à seguinte pergunta de partida: que papel pode a China assumir na segurança marítima de África? As conclusões mostram que a China é um ator importante na segurança marítima da costa oriental de África, ainda que o mesmo não suceda na costa ocidental. Todavia, se os seus relevantes interesses económicos nesta região ficarem comprometidos pelas ameaças existentes no domínio marítimo, Pequim terá necessariamente de assumir um papel ativo no seu combate.; The world ocean is vital for the economic development of China, which has emerged in this century as a key player in critical sectors of the maritime domain (such as international maritime transport or fishing). With regard to Africa’s maritime spaces, both the east and west coasts are fundamental for obtaining and/or transporting the resources mainly energy and minerals) that China needs for the economic growth it wants to achieve. To ensure the security of those maritime spaces, Beijing has been expanding its naval military footprint across borders and developing significant power projection capabilities.&#xD;
Based on an interpretivist epistemological framework, a qualitative research strategy and inductive reasoning, this article seeks to answer the following question through a case study: what is China’s role in Africa’s maritime security? The conclusions show that China is a relevant player in maritime security on the east coast of Africa, although his is not the case on the west coast. However, if its significant economic interests in this region are undermined by existing threats in the maritime domain, Beijing will necessarily have to take an active role in combating them.
