Resumo: There are various dimensions to talk about Japan’s economy, especially when it comes to do with its relationship with Asia. Today, I would like to start with the deflation that Japan has been experiencing over the past 30 years. This trend is the unique case among OECD member countries. In particular, from 1995 to 2021, negative inflation (which means deflation) was observed in 15 years. During the said period, even when positive inflation rates had occurred, its rate was near zero, and only three years exceeded 1%. In fact, this deflation reflects one aspect of the impacts of the expansion of economic globalization. The period of deflation in Japan’s economy roughly coincides with the globalization trend that began in earnest after the end of the Cold War. Globalization has brought an unprecedentedly rapid and extensive movement of goods, money, and people. As a free-trade-system believer, Japan has promoted free trade in both multi and bi-lateral contexts.

É nesse sentido que os valores justos que se obtêm são tidos como conservadores.; Imagine you’ve found the house of your dreams, but, when they tell you its price, you have second thoughts about going ahead. If you pay too dearly and the market then corrects to the downside, you could suffer significant losses that will be amplified by leverage if you took out a mortgage. It would be great, then, to have at your disposal an analytical tool that is both intuitive and easy to use and would help you to avoid overpaying for your new house. That is the objective of this brief note, by using a small set of hypotheses that effectively give the benefit of the doubt to the real estate in question in its ability to produce economic value, as a multiannual asset that it is. It is in that sense that the fair values we obtain through such an analysis are considered conservative.

    <summary type="text">Título: Implicações geo-económicas da Guerra da Ucrânia na posição da China
Autor: Graça, Pedro Borges
Resumo: A China, logo desde o início da Guerra, recusou-se a condenar sem reservas a invasão da Ucrânia. A principal implicação geoeconómica é pois a aproximação efectiva da Rússia à China, em detrimento da União Europeia e de países como a Alemanha e a França, e consequentemente a estruturação progressiva de um eixo ou aliança estratégica baseada em entendimentos e parcerias prévias como os BRICS (Brasil, Rússia, Índia, China e África do Sul) e o chamado Grupo de Shangai (China, Cazaquistão, Índia, Paquistão, Quirguistão, Rússia, Tajiquistão, Uzbequistão e muito recentemente o Irão).&#xD;
Iremos portanto assistir a curto prazo a uma recomposição das áreas geoeconómicas correspondentes aos dois blocos político-militares (Nato e Grupo de Shangai) que agora estão em processo de consolidação como consequência da Guerra da Ucrânia e a que correspondem duas mundovisões antagónicas e respectivos valores – a da Democracia e a da Ditadura Pós-Moderna – e portanto dois modelos político-económicos a serem apresentados como opção de Desenvolvimento aos restantes países do sistema internacional, principalmente aos africanos e asiáticos.&#xD;
A competitividade poderá vir a ser mais agressiva, raiando a conflitualidade não-armada com o aumento das acções de espionagem económica e tecnológica e de ciberataques, a que corresponderá a procura intensa de soluções de segurança da informação. Face à incerteza crescente, é vital o desenvolvimento de uma análise estratégica dinâmica para se acompanhar a evolução desta conjuntura tão volátil que requer correcções constantes às estratégias e correlativos planeamentos.; China, from the very beginning of the war, refused to unreservedly condemn the invasion of Ukraine. The main geoeconomic implication is therefore the effective rapprochement between Russia and China, to the detriment of the European Union and countries such as Germany and France, and consequently the progressive structuring of a strategic axis or alliance based on previous understandings and partnerships such as the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and the so-called Shanghai Group (China, Kazakhstan, India, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and very recently Iran).&#xD;
We will therefore witness a recomposition of the geo-economic areas corresponding to the two political-military blocs (Nato and the Shanghai Group) that are now in the process of consolidation as a result of the Ukrainian War and which correspond to two antagonistic worldviews and respective values – that of Democracy and that of the Post-Modern Dictatorship – and therefore two political- economic models to be presented as a Development option to the remaining countries of the international system, mainly to Africans and Asians.&#xD;
Competitiveness may become more aggressive, bordering on unarmed conflict with the increase in economic and technological espionage and cyberattacks, which will correspond to the intense demand for information security solutions. Faced with growing uncertainty, it is vital to develop a dynamic strategic analysis to monitor the evolution of this highly volatile environment that requires constant corrections to strategies and related planning.

    <summary type="text">Título: Mercados financeiros em tempos de guerra : os primeiros 90 dias de uma guerra (in)esperada
Autor: Coelho, Miguel; Gonçalves, José António
Resumo: A (in)esperada guerra na Europa, com epicentro na Ucrânia, está a ter consequências geopolíticas e económicas complexas com duração e severidade ainda desconhecidas.&#xD;
Com efeito, para além do drama humano que o povo ucraniano diariamente enfrenta, existem efeitos de segunda ordem que colocam em causa os equilíbrios económicos mundiais com impacto no bem-estar da população mundial, conforme aliás tão bem ilustra James Gleick (1987) quando refere os efeitos de um “o simples bater de asa …”.&#xD;
Neste contexto, pretende-se analisar o comportamento dos mercados financeiros e de commodities nos primeiros 90 dias de guerra, comparando esse comportamento com o observado em crises anteriores de natureza semelhante.&#xD;
Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que a invasão da Ucrânia produziu um impacto nos mercados análogo às guerras cuja probabilidade já se adivinhava.&#xD;
A evolução nos primeiros 90 dias é relativamente transversal nos mercados sendo, no entanto, notório que o impacto é menos acentuado nos Estados Unidos do que na Europa. Já na dívida publica, pese embora o estádio diferente, à partida, do mercado de taxas de juro na Europa e nos Estados Unidos, registaram-se subidas da ordem dos 100 pontos base em ambos.; The (un)expected war in Europe, with its epicenter in Ukraine, is having complex geopolitical and economic consequences of unknown duration and severity.&#xD;
Indeed, in addition to the human drama that the Ukrainian people face daily, there are second-order effects that jeopardize world economic balances with an impact on the well-being of the world population, as James Gleick (1987) so well illustrates when he refers the effects of a “simple flapping of a wing……”.&#xD;
In this context, we intend to analyze the behavior of financial and commodity markets in the first 90 days of war, comparing this behavior with that observed in previous crises of a similar nature.&#xD;
The results obtained allow us to conclude that the invasion of Ukraine produced an impact on the markets like those in wars whose probability was already anticipated.&#xD;
The evolution in the first 90 days is relatively transversal across the markets, although it is clear that the impact is less pronounced in the United States than in Europe. As for public debt, despite the different stage of the interest rate market in Europe and the United States, there were increases of around 100 basis points in both.
