Autor: Soares, Maria João dos Reis Moreira, 1964-; Duarte, João Miguel Couto, 1966-
Resumo: Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) and Fernando Távora (1923-2005) are key figures for understanding the architecture of Italy and Portugal in the second half of the twentieth century. The two architects are also linked by their shared interest in Japanese culture. Távora visited Japan in 1960; Scarpa in 1969, and again in 1978. They both visited the Katsura Imperial Villa. The drawings that Távora made at the time and the notes he took about the villa reveal a certain awe and fascination. Távora confirmed that all of the so-called Modern was there. The accounts of Scarpa’s visit to the villa show an almost religious and, at all times, contagious enthusiasm, which was confirmed by his son, Tobia Scarpa (b. 1935). The paper aims to compare Japan’s meanings and architecture in the works of Carlo Scarpa and Fernando Távora, based on their visits to Katsura Imperial Villa. It revisits the modernity of this seventeenth-century Japanese architectural masterpiece.

From his artistic prolific production, we highlight the contribution for TAP Portugal airline, which relied on his illustrations to promote its internal and external image. More than an isolated attitude, it was symptomatic of its unorthodox attitude towards hiring designers, that could easily extrapolate to a certain modus faciendi of Portuguese commissioners during the time period studied. The contribute of a Japanese author, may very well be the epitome of this attitude. The article attempts to provide an exhaustive survey of his illustrations for TAP.
Three years after his death, we must give fair recognition for the quality of his work.

The context in which this article is presented derives from a Phd research in design (FAUL) covering the areas of Design History and Criticism on the airline TAP Portugal, since its beginnings (1945) until the year in which the designation changed to Air Portugal (1979). The interior of a flag carrier aircraft was always a territorial extension “staged” for inner and outer consumption, which in TAP’s case meant, a compromise between the ideology and the official taste of the Estado Novo, and the international tourism clichés. "Portugal in the air," metonymy for a TAP airplane, sought to express the image of a modern country (only existing "in the clouds"). Despite the importance of technology, achieved by the successes of aeronautical engineering, each TAP airplane was a "Portuguese house" where nationals and foreigners anticipated the arrival in Portugal, or save the last memory from the country.

The situation compels us to dare transgression and appeal to the role of pure reflection, as well as a conceptual ascendant for the construction of a new pedagogical framework of design teaching. One that allows us to obtain non-immediate results, that is, in a sustained way with a real critical attitude “à la longue”. Thinking, thinking, thinking. We call for the test and proving of new pedagogical strategies for design teaching that reconciles pure investigation, not engaged with increasingly volatile "markets" or daily “sign of the times”, but developing holistic values as contributes to an emerging new "Hermeneutic Designer”.
