Were inclued 5695 pupils of the 8th, 10th and 12th grade, who participated in the study, mostly female (53.9%). With a mean age of 15.46 years (SD = 1.8), was carried out a study of the averages of social participation based on gender, grade and region based on the ANOVA and Post-hoc (Tukey HSD) for the analysis of differences between groups. In the results, based on the dimensions of the Questionnaire on Expectations and Social Participation and Positive Development, in the study of gender, there is a greater Sense of Belonging and Social Self-efficacy in the masculine gender, and higher Expectations of Participation in the Community in the feminine gender. The dimension Active Participation and Total Participation or its Expectation did not reveal statistically significant differences. In the analysis by school grade, the 8th grade stands out due to the greater Sense of Belonging and lesser Social Self-efficacy. Active Participation, Expectations of Community Participation and Total Participation or Expectation is higher in the 12th grade. Finally, in the exploration by regions, only the Total Participation or its Expectation revealed statistically significant differences, presenting differences between the regions of the Alentejo and Algarve, and a greater participation by young people from Alentejo. It is considered fundamental to study the characteristics of the socially more participative young people. Autonomy and active participation of young people in the identification and management of their lives’ problems are a promising way to promote their well-being and prevent health risks.

The aim of this study was to analyse the social alienation impact on the feelings of belonging to a group, friends’ relationships and wellbeing of Portuguese adolescents. Methods: A total of 5695 Portuguese adolescents with a mean age of 15.46 (SD=1.80), attending the 8th, 10th and 12th years of schooling in mainland Portugal were included in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. Two models of path analysis were executed, one for the more resilient group of adolescents and one for the less resilient group, where it was found that the negative impact of social alienation on adolescents’ wellbeing was greater in the less resilient group. The friend’s relationship appears associated with less social alienation, as well as the feelings of belonging to a group, in both groups of resilience, nevertheless in the less resilient group the impact of the feelings of belonging reduces while the impact of the relation with the friends increases. The negative impact of social alienation on the wellbeing of adolescents is evident and it is essential to promote skills that prevent these consequences and promote the well-being of adolescents. Resilience emerges as a protective factor for the negative consequences of social alienation. Presented results strengthen the need to implement among adolescents’ programs that promote their personal and social skills with emphasis on resilience.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of tobacco, alcohol and social factors (communication with parents, relationships with friends and liking school) on psychological factors as well as differences in gender and school years. The sample consisted of adolescents who participated in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBCS) study, in 2018, in Portugal and had the participation of 8215 adolescents of the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades, being 52,7% females, with a mean age of 14.36 years (SD=2,18). The results showed that adolescents who have good communication with parents and who like school show fewer psychological symptoms. On the other hand, a bad relationship with friends arises related to an increase in psychological symptoms. The consumption of tobacco and alcohol did not present differences of gender, however they vary according to the school year and relate negatively to psychological symptoms. The results found reinforce the importance of communication and relationship with parents as protective factors and demonstrate that the relationship with friends can be a protective factor for wellbeing. It is therefore crucial to simultaneously help young people to develop strategies to minimize potential adverse effects of this relationship, in particular as regards peer pressure and consequently reduce their impact on their physical and mental health.

This investigation of the national HBSC study evaluated the prevalence of self-harm behaviors in Portuguese adolescents.
